“Great design is all about the personality of the people who live there.”
For New York interior designer James Huniford, his client’s adventurous spirit was the key ingredient when creating this contemporary Hamptons farmhouse. The young, stylish couple gave James the freedom to explore and create a new identity for their 1910 shingled farmhouse and the result is nothing short of amazing—a relaxed, contemporary take on a modern beach retreat that’s sensitive to both the home’s history and the owners’ personal style.
Jame’s strong sense of style comes through in his clean and edited aesthetic choices: chalky gray stained reclaimed wood floors and a muted beige and blue-gray color palette are the backdrop for a crisp yet warm environment and give the illusion of a seamless space while polished marble counters paired with gray-washed barn doors and luxurious alpaca upholstery lend a soothing sense of understated elegance. “I like that play of clean and modern with a rugged kind of tension,” James said. The entire home is a study on juxtaposition and restraint but my favorite elements hands down have to be the vintage Swedish rocker re-upholstered in a romantic muted floral fabric and the French mattress window seat cushion upholstered in Zak & Fox Hidaka fabric.
